Topics Include: 1-About IMAGE Builder 2-What is IMAGE Builder and what does it do for you? 3-How you might use IMAGE Builder to Monitor Volume Usage Patterns 4-Your Inspection Report Inventory - Very Important! 5-Transfering the IMAGE Builder Application File to your Host 6-Builder License Authorization 7-Getting Started with IMAGE Builder 8-Product Documentation, Panel Help and Field Help 1-About IMAGE Builder IMAGE Builder is a 'No-Charge' application that NewEra Software, Inc. wants to make available to those using IMAGE Focus. IMAGE Builder is part of the NewEra IMAGE Management family of products that also includes SAE, IMAGE Focus, IMAGE Tune-Up and IMAGE Plug-Ins. For more information on NewEra and NewEra Products visit - www.newera.com. 2-What is IMAGE Builder and what does it do for you? IMAGE Builder gives you enhanced access to IMAGE Focus Inspection Reports. From an IMAGE Inspection Report, IMAGE Builder will extract Image Config- uration data and present it as Views or Files. Each Builder View is fully active in that you can point-and-shoot within a view to select, sort and filter. The Builder Selection Tool Sets are designed to fit the view giving you access to each Data Set Element for Image repair, maintenance or doc- umentation. IMAGE Builder Views include: Data Set Report View: This view displays the complete content of the IMAGE Focus Data Set Report. The data is presented in an interactive view with selectable sub-views that allow you to isolate specific data sets by Data Set Class including System, LNKLST, LPALST, PROCLIB, JES, VTAM and TCP/IP. Within the view, filtering functions allow you to drill down into specific Volumes or Data Set types including HFS, PDS, SEQ, VSAM, or PDSE. Each data set in the view can be accessed via a Selection Tool Set that supports view, edit, copy, print and more for additional detailed Information. Image Configuration View: This view displays only those data sets used by z/OS to IPL the named System Image. Again the data is presented in an interactive state. Member name and member suffix are presented in separate columns for analytic convenience. A data set name filter allows for 'Partial Name' filtering so data sets with similar names can be grouped together into a custom view. The Selection Tool Set supports view, edit, copy, print and more for additional detailed information. Inspection Reports List: This view displays a list of available IMAGE Focus Inspection Reports based on the High Level Qualifier detected as the root of the location to be used to store the current report. The Selection Tool Set in this view allows you to select a report from the list, view and print or delete a report. The IMAGE Builder User Interface also includes Command Line commands. Each command invokes a sub-menu or function designed to analyze or compare the content of a report, build content files for post-processing by app- lications you create, provide user assistance or Backup System Volumes. 3-How you might use IMAGE Builder to Monitor Volume Usage Patterns Maintaining current Backups of System Volumes and Data Sets they contain is critical. Without a current Backup it's not possible to restore the system to its current operational state. IMAGE Builder will assist you in your efforts to create and maintain Volume Backups in two ways. First, IMAGE Builder automatically builds a list of volumes for each System Sysplex pairing encounter. This Volume List is stored and each time Builder reads an Inspection Report for the same System Sysplex pairing it will compare System Volumes. Changes in Volume Usage Patterns, if any, will be displayed in a pop-up window when you type 'BACKUP' on the Command Line and press enter. If changes are noted, you will want to consider updating the Job used to Backup System Volumes or updating the Volume List used in monitoring for changes. If changes are not detected, the Backup System Selection Screen is displayed. Second, IMAGE Builder will assist you in creating a Batch Job that can be used to Backup System Volumes. Support is provided for both Dfdss and FDR. Select a system to display the Backup Tools Menu. Using the available Tool set you def- ine site standards for Batch Job Cards, Hardware Definitions and Job Outputs. Using these standards Builder creates a Job to Backup System Volumes. This Job is run in conjuction with your Job Scheduler. Prior to Saving the Job, you use the View and Edit Tools to make any required changes. 4-Your Inspection Report Inventory - Very Important! As you use IMAGE Focus, Inspection Reports accumulate under the HLQ that you define for report storage. IMAGE Builder reads this accumulated report set each time you provide the HLQ upon entry or enter 'REPORTS' on the Command Line. On average, it will take IMAGE Builder a second or two to find, read and extract needed information from a report. Once each report is processed a list of all Inspection Reports is displayed. From this Report List you make report selections. If you have only a few reports in inventory, 25 or so, this processing cycle is no problem but if you have lots and lots of reports in your inventory, the wait for processing will be not be enjoyable. Since you will most likely be working with the most recent reports it is suggested, when possible, that you delete all unwanted older reports from your inventory before you begin. 5-Transfering the BUILDER System, Application and Panels to your Host IMAGE Builder and its components are available as downloads only. Once you have selected a product and downloaded it to your desktop, you must Self-Extract it and move the INSTALL component to your HOST system for execution. Normally the transfer of INSTALL to your MVS system is done using a TSO File Transfer program. This file transfer is done in BINARY and not the ASCII/EBCDIC format. Before you attempt to move INSTALL to your HOST, you will want to pre-allocate a destination dataset with the correct DCB attributes. a) Pre-allocating the destination dataset on your Host: On the HOST system, the destination dataset must be: RECFM=FB, LRECL=80, BLKSIZE=27920. The dataset will require about 11 CYL on a 3390. b) Transfer the INSTALL file to your MVS system: Normally the transfer of INSTALL to your MVS system is done using a TSO File Transfer program. When transferring the file to MVS, specify BINARY. An example of the Allocate Screen you will use is shown below: +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Allocate New Data Set Command ===> Data Set Name . . . : prefix.INSTALL Management class . . . (Blank for default management class) Storage class . . . . (Blank for default storage class) Volume serial . . . . (Blank for system default volume) Device type . . . . . If you encounter problems during the file download, you should email NewEra Technical Support at: support@newera.com c) The INSTALL job will create a Partioned DATASET (PDSE), "Prefix.BUILDER" and will create a load library "Prefix.BUILDER.LOAD". Now that you have the file INSTALLed on your HOST, modify the JOB card, and the PROC statement with your installation specific information. ***************************** Top of Data ****************************** //INSTALL JOB 1,'INSTALL BUILDER', <===== MODIFY // CLASS=A, <===== MODIFY // MSGCLASS=A <===== MODIFY //******************************************************************* //* * //* JOB: INSTALL FUNCTION: INSTALL FROM INLINE DATA * //* * //* * //* STEP:LKED LINK EDITS THE LOAD PROGRAM * //* STEP:LOAD VERIFIES JOBSTREAM * //* STEP:IEBUPDTE CREATES THE TEMPLIB USING IEBUPDTE * //* * //******************************************************************* //* //* * //* BLDPRFX - PREFIX FOR BUILDER DATASETS * //* DSKUNIT - UNIT NAME FOR BUILDER DATASETS * //* DSKVOLU - VOLUME SERIAL NUMBER FOR BUILDER DATASETS * //* //* //INSTALL PROC BLDPRFX='prefix.BUILDER', <===== MODIFY PREFIX // DSKUNIT=3390, <===== MODIFY DISK UNIT // DSKVOLU=?????, <===== MODIFY VOL SERIAL // DSTYPE=LIBRARY //* Where BLDPRFX ='prefix' is your TSO prefix.BUILDER. Where DSKUNIT = The disk unit (Example 3390) Where DSKVOLU =????? is the volume serial number of the DASD. Where DSTYPE =LIBRARY is to generate a PDSE. Please note that Builder will test for your SYSUID (TSO Prefix) and force it as the high-level qualifier to the PDS you select. So when you are all done, the fully qualified name of the application that we are looking for will look like this: prefix.BUILDER(BUILDER) d) If for some reason you did not use BUILDER and the name of the PDS: If you specify a PDSE name other than BUILDER you will need to make a small modification to the Application install file INSTALL. To do this, open the file in EDIT. Beginning on approximately line 199 of the INSTALL file, you will find the following configuration header: / /**********************************************************************/ /* IMAGE BUILDER CONFIGURATION PARAMETERS YOU MAY WANT TO MODIFY */ /**********************************************************************/ URFILE = 'BUILDER' /* <==== CHANGE VALUE AS NEEDED */ /* URFILES is the secondary HLQ of a data set used to house the */ /* IMAGE Builder ReXX EXECT and related ISPF Application Panels */ /**********************************************************************/ /* ONLY IF MULTIPLE USERS WILL SHARE A SINGLE BUILDER ReXX EXECT */ /**********************************************************************/ PREFIX = 'TSO_USERID' /* <==== CHANGE VALUE AS NEEDED */ /* PREFIX is the primary HLQ of a data set used to house the IMAGE */ /* Builder ReXX EXEC and related ISPF Application Panels. It is */ /* only used you want want multiple users to share the a Builder */ /* ReXX EXEC and related Panels. If not specified PREFIX will de- */ /* fault to your TSO USERID. Change an install from single user to */ /* multi will have no adverse effect on existing user files. */ e) Submitting the INSTALL JOB will create a Partioned DATASET named Prefix.BUILDER. Now you are ready to submit the INSTALL JOB. Using ISPF option 3.4 specify the file 'INSTALL', then type 'sub' to submit for execution. An example of the submit is shown below. sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss DSLIST - Data Sets Matching sysuid.INSTALL Row 1 of 1 Command ===> Scroll ===> PAGE Command - Enter "/" to select action Message Volume --------------------------------------------------------------------------- sub Prefix.INSTALL OS39M1 ***************************** End of Data Set list ************************ f) If you have installed before If you have installed IMAGE Builder before, you will need to DELETE the PDSE And and the load libraies before you attempt a new install. This will have no effect on the Volume Montors or other settings. After the JOB has finished, you should verify that the BUILDER PDSE does and the BUILDER.LOAD libraries, in fact, exist. If they do, you're ready to run IMAGE Builder. If you encounter problems during the file download, you should email NewEra Technical Support at: support@newera.com 8-Builder License Authorization. If you intend to run IMAGE Builder outside of IMAGE Focus you will want to get an authorization code from NewEra Technical Support. support@newera.com Once you have the code you may authorize your use of IMAGE in one of two ways. First, during the installation process you can enter the code in the Install- ation Job by overtyping the value of BCODE=. If you plan to also to use the IMAGE Tune-Up Workbench, you will need a seperate code but both can be entered in a single IMAGE Builder install. A segment of the Install Job is shown be- low: /****************************************************************************/ /* Authorization Control Card */ /****************************************************************************/ /* IMAGE Builder and TuneUp are automatically fully authorized for 90 days . */ /* You may change this default authorization by overtyping the value shown */ /* with Authorization Codes provided to you by NewEra Technical Support. */ /****************************************************************************/ BCODE=BUILDRAUTHCODE TCODE=TUNEUPAUTHCODE Second, if you have already installed logon to IMAGE Builder, when the Main Menu is displayed, place an "L" after the Builder Selection Pointer and press enter. The Builder License Record for the installation CPU is displayed. Now following the instructions given by Technical Support, update either or all of the Terms, Products or Authorization Code Fields and press enter. You will be asked to confirm the License Update. When you Confirm the license will be val- idated. If the validation fails, a message will be displayed and you will be placed back in the License Record.
