OS/390 and z/OS System Management, moving Forward!
...Managed System Infrastructure for Setup (msys for Setup) is an IBM ease-of-manageability initiative that seeks to reduce the skill required for e-server initialization. Using defaults and best practices values, Web-based wizards, derive low-level values from answers to high-level questions. System updates are automatic.
IBM e-Server zSeries 900 and z/OS Reference Guide, October 2000.
...IMAGE Focus is a unique System Management Application that systematically identifies, locates and inspects the hundreds of critical parameters in an OS/390 or z/OS System Image. It supports real-time IMAGE Change Control by monitoring and reporting on events that would result in IPL failure. IMAGE Configuration Files, which are shared with SAE, are automatically created as Images are tested and documented.

IMAGE Focus extends msys for Setup!
Users of IMAGE Focus will note that msys for Setup deals only with a single issue, IMAGE CREATION. IMAGE Focus enhances msys for Setup and the entire Image Management Process by:
Validating Resources
In addition to checking the SYNTAX generated automatically by msys for Setup or manually by your system programming staff IMAGE Focus VALIDATES the existence and availability of the system resources needed during
an IPL.
Monitoring for Changes
Once System Images or certified for production IMAGE Focus will MONITOR designated images for changes by comparing current images against the content of Image Configuration Files created and stored during the Validation Phase. Any change detected will be flagged for impact and automatically reported.
Assessing New OS Releases
Using the New OS Release Facility included in IMAGE Focus 3.5 your system programming staff can quickly access the impact of OS upgrades to OS/390 R2V10 or oz/OS R1V1. Messages such as, 'SWAP DATASETS ARE NO LONGER USED" can improve productivity and reduce upgrade time.
Extend Configuration Management to Subsystems
OS images are only one component of an enterprise system with IMAGE Focus you extend system change and configuration management to include JES, VTAM and
TCPIP.
Recover from IPL failures
Finally, in the unlikely event that an image fails to IPL you will want to use the IMAGE Services Facility included in SAE to aid in determining what went wrong, fixing it and restoring your e-server to full operational status.
